The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. along with the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. had more in common than being Greek brothers and sisters. Both organizations went home with the winning trophy at the annual homecoming step show at the Lighthouse Convention Center on Friday, October 23rd. This year's step show was hosted by BET's Coming to The Stage semi-finalist comedian Lil Duval.

According to the step show rules, both competing fraternities and sororities had a total of 15 minutes to show the audience and judges what they could do. Shaw University's Junior, Donald Robertson, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. said they had their goals in mind when preparing for the step show. "Our whole goal was to be clean and precise on every step. We break down every step and transition so that we can perfect them all. We wanted to show people that Alphas can step and not just party hop," said Robertson."

The show began with the opening performance by the Gamma Rho Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta from St. Augustine's College. The Greeks used different props to help enhance their show. The Lota Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma used a boxing ring to go along with their theme of being boxers, while the Beta Theta Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho used a chart with mathematical equations to help showcase their Sigma Gamma Rho Academy theme.

The first winner to be called was Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority followed by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Junior Larry Johnson, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity said he left the show relieved to see that all of their hard work really paid off in the end. "To be honest there aren't enough words to really express how I felt because you have to put so much time and energy into the show. I am very excited and happy that we won," said Johnson.

For some it was more about the experience of being in the show than actually winning. "All that matters is that we had fun," said Kappa Alpha Psi Darius Swift, Junior.

Some students were pleased by the show but some expected more. "The show was not as good as last year, but I did enjoy the host," said Kristyn Carswell, Senior.

Even though Carswell didn't particularly like the show, Junior, Whitney Henderson enjoyed herself and thought all the performances were unique and interesting.
